What are amorphous metal core transformers (AMDT’S)?
The core of conventional transformers consists of stacks of laminations that are made from silicon steel with an almost uniform crystalline structure (CRGO). In transformers with amorphous core, a ribbon of steel is wound forming the core.
Amorphous metal is a unique alloy that exhibits a molecular arrangement that is random in structure, rather than the organized crystalline structure of CRGO core steel. Due to its unique molecular structure, amorphous metal cores are more readily magnetized and demagnetized when energized, resulting in significantly lower energy loss compared to CRGO steel. AMDT technology is considered mature and has been proven to be reliable
Biggest advantage of amorphous metal core transformers is that amorphous steel has lower hysteresis & Eddy current losses resulting in very Low No Load Current, Energy and less heat, when compared with conventional CRGO Core Transformers
